Afghan prosecutor killed in bombing

Kabul, May 12 (IANS) A district prosecutor in Afghanistan was killed in a bomb blast Sunday in the southern province of Helmand, a government spokesman said.

Marja district prosecutor Mohammad Lal Hakimi was travelling to office around 7 a.m., when his car was struck by a roadside bomb, spokesman Omar Zhwak told Xinhua.

He blamed the Taliban for the attack.

The outfit which launched its annual offensive last month has said anyone working for government and the NATO-led troops are “legitimate targets”.

Earlier this month, a provincial peace council chief and a local tribal elder were shot dead by militants in Helmand.

According to a UN report released in February, 2,754 civilians were killed and 4,805 injured in violence in the war-hit country last year.
