Act on Cauvery Tribunal’s final award, Jayalalithaa urges PM

Chennai, May 17 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa Friday urged the prime minister to order the implementation of the final award of Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.

In a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Friday, Jayalalithaa said: “I exhort you to order the Ministry of Water Resources to constitute the Cauvery Management Board and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee without any further delay.”

Jayalalithaa said the centre has not shown necessary alacrity in constituting the two bodies for the implementation of the final order of the tribunal, which was published in the Gazette of India this February, six years after it was pronounced.

The gazette notification gives the award a legal seal. Under Section 6 of Inter State River Water Disputes Act 1956, the central government has to notify the award of the tribunal.

She said the constitution of a supervisory committee under the chairmanship of the secretary, Ministry of Water Resources to implement the tribunal’s final award is only an interim measure.
