UN tourism conference in Hyderabad from April 12

Hyderabad, April 8 (IANS) The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) conference on sustainable tourism development is beginning here April 12.

The three-day international conference will also coincide with 25th joint meeting of the UNWTO Commission for East Asia, Pacific and South Asia.

Union Tourism Minister K. Chiranjeevi told a news conference here that the conference would deliberate on the future plans of UNWTO Commission. About 200 delegates from 29 countries are expected to attend the conference, which will discuss and share the best policies and practices around the world.

UNWTO events are coming back to Hyderabad after nine years. The city had earlier hosted the 73rd session of the UNTWO executive council in July 2004.

UNWTO is the United Nations agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism.

Twenty countries from East Asia and Pacific and nine from south Asia will debate the policy measures that can be adopted for promotion of tourism in the region.

Chiranjeevi said tourism offers immense potential for generating revenue, creating employment, alleviating poverty and also to showcase India and its culture to external world.

The number of foreign tourists coming to India grew by 2.5 percent during the last quarter 2012-13. He said Andhra Pradesh tops among domestic tourists, more because of pilgrim tour to Tirupati. The minister Rs.221 crores were allotted for tourism development in Andhra Pradesh for 2013-14.

Some of the projects that are to be taken up during the next year in the state include a mega tourism circuit at Konaseema, Bhadrachalam and Papikondalu and another mega circuit at Kondapally and Ibrahimpatnam at a cost of Rs.50 crore each. Circuits at a cost of Rs.8 crores have also been planned at Pileru and Nizamabad.

Chiranjeevi said the ministry would also set up international culinary institute in the temple town of Tirupati.
