Two held for Kolkata university vandalism

Kolkata, April 11 (IANS) A day after the Presidency University here was vandalised by student activists, police Thursday arrested two of the attackers.

“We have arrested two persons who were among those who vandalised the university,” Joint Commissioner of Police Jawed Shamim said. He refused to comment on their political affiliation.

Armed with sticks and rods, Trinamool Congress Chatra Parishad members allegedly stormed the Presidency University campus Wednesday, assaulting students, including women, and vandalised its famous physics department.

The miscreants ransacked the heritage, century-old Baker’s Building which houses the physics laboratory where eminent scientists like Jagadish Chandra Bose, Satyendra Nath Bose and Meghnad Saha conducted research.

Vice chancellor Malbika Sarkar, who has gone on record saying that the vandals carried the ruling Trinamool Congress party’s flags during the attack, asked Trinamool chief and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Governor M.K. Narayanan to ensure the miscreants are given exemplary punishment.

The vandalism was a part of a series of alleged statewide retaliatory attacks after Trinamool supremo Banerjee and her Finance Minister Amit Mitra were Tuesday heckled in Delhi by activists of Students Federation of India, the student wing of the Communist Party of India-Marxist.

The West Bengal Human Rights Commission has ordered a probe by police as well as an independent inquiry by the former Presidency University principal Amol Mukhopadhyay, into attack on Presidency.
