Rahul denial no reflection on his future as PM: Congress

New Delhi, April 4 (IANS) Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi’s dismissal of a question on speculation that he would pitch to be prime minister was no reflection on whether or not he would take the job, the party said Thursday.

“When he said that he is not attaching much importance to who is going to be the prime minister, that does not mean that he is not going to be the prime minister or that he is going to be the prime minister,” party spokesperson P.C. Chacko told reporters here.

Addressing a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) event Thursday morning, Gandhi denied he was in the race to be the prime minister. Rubbishing unending speculation that he might pitch for the prime ministerial job, Gandhi said: “It’s an irrelevant question. It’s all smoke.”

“This is not the first time he is saying this. He said this in Jaipur. He said this on many occasions. Today we are measuring politics with certain old parameters like who is going to be the minister and who is going to be the prime minister alone,” Chacko said.

Chacko added that Gandhi’s philosophy was for empowering the poor.

“His concept of politics is empowering people. For this, the organisational structure, the style of politics all need to be changed. That basic change is what he has explained today,” Chacko said, commenting on the address.

“He is preparing the party for the future. It is a long process. As a party functionary, that was his job. He was in-charge of the Youth Congress, in-charge of the students all over the country,” Chacko said.
