Jammu: Over 90 people injured in landmine blasts in the frontier areas of Jammu and Kashmir during Operation Prakram, the India-Pakistan military stand-off in 2001, are yet to be get compensation.
Minister of State for Home Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo told the legislative assembly Friday that 91 people were injured or maimed due to landmine explosions during Operation Prakaram.
“Out of these, 73 people were injured by landmine blasts near the LoC (Line of Control) in Jammu division. Of these 73, 33 injured people belong to Nowshera area of Rajouri district. Rs.16.95 lakh was paid to 17 injured people as ex-gratia relief. The remaining cases are under process,” Kichloo said.
He added that in Kashmir division, 18 people were injured by landmine blasts near the LoC, out of which 13 have been paid ex-gratia relief of Rs.9 lakh. The remaining cases are under examination or re-verification at different stages.
Kichloo said that the Ministry of Defence has formulated a scheme for payment of ex-gratia compensation to the people injured by landmine blasts.
Operation Parakram was a massing of troops on the India and Pakistan border after the terrorist attack on the Indian parliament in December 2001.
