Former wrestling coach Roopchand dead

Gurgaon, April 1 (IANS) Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award-winner and former national wrestling coach Roopchand, 85, passed away here Monday following cardiac arrest, an official said.

He is survived by four daughters.

Roopchand was general secretary of the Indian-Style Wrestling Association of India. Born Nov 26, 1927, in district Bhiwani’s Bamla village, Roopchand breathed his last in his house here in Sector 17, said a spokesperson of the district administration.

He was a wrestling coach at the National Institute of Sports (NIS). Prior to that, he also trained grapplers as the Indian army coach from 1963 to 1971. From 1955 onwards he coached and officiated at several national and international wrestling events.

Under him, he prepared several wrestlers including Satpal, Subhash, Jagminder Singh, Rajesh Kumar, Randhir Singh, Kartar Singh, Jaiprakash and Uday Singh.

His body was taken to his native village for the last rites.
