Era of police killing students back: Congress

Kolkata, April 3 (IANS) After the death of a student activist allegedly due to a police baton charge, the Congress Wednesday said the era of students getting killed by police was back to haunt West Bengal.

“With the new government taking over, we had thought that the state will witness change. What I see now is the politics of police killing students, that once prevailed in the state, has come back,” state Congress president Pradip Bhattacharya told mediapersons here.

Students Federation of India (SFI) activist Sudipto Gupta died Tuesday of a head injury in police custody after participating in a protest. While police maintain that the activist died after he crashed into a lamp post while being taken to jail in a bus, the SFI alleged he was fatally beaten by the police during its crackdown on the protestors.

Bhattacharya was also critical of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who corroborated the police’s claim.

“Whenever one dies, she (Banerjee) immediately is ready with her comments. If she comments then how can the investigation proceed,” said Bhattacharya, adding that it was futile expressing grief if those responsible for his death are not punished.
