Raipur, April 11 (IANS) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Thursday directed the Chhattisgarh government to ensure availability of doctors in state-run jails.
The direction came from NHRC Chairperson Justice K.G. Balakrishnan when he was told that the Dantewada jail, some 345 km from here, had only a part-time doctor.
Chief Secretary Sunil Kumar was directed to ensure that doctors were made available for conducting proper health check-ups of inmates in jails.
A three-member NHRC team led by Justice Balakrishnan was hearing the cases of alleged human rights violations in Chhattisgarh.
The commission heard a total of 26 cases. The hearing will continue Friday.
