Drink-drive nurse, who left boy dying, jailed

London, April 24 (IANS) A drunk nurse has been jailed for five years and four months for speeding off after mowing down a schoolboy cyclist, leaving him dying. She has also been banned from driving for five years.

Heather Butler, 67, was more than twice over the drink-drive limit when she hit Sam Brown, 15. She sped off with his bicycle which was stuck in the front grille of her car, only to stop later to hurl it away, Daily Express reported.

The boy died from head injuries in hospital that night.

Prosecutor Mark Kendall told Hull Crown Court that a fellow driver followed her because she was driving erratically, only to suddenly see “a cloud of dust and the Audi jerk about”. Moments later he saw Butler stop her car to remove the bike from her grille.

Butler has pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving while over the alcohol limit, failing to stop and failing to report the accident.
