Court seeks report on unsafe school buildings in Punjab

Chandigarh, April 22 (IANS) Taking note of complaints that students were being forced to attend classes in unsafe buildings of government schools in Punjab, the Punjab and Haryana High Court Monday sought a status report from the state government.

The Punjab government has been directed to send the report within two weeks. The direction was given by a division bench of acting Chief Justice Jasbir Singh and Justice Rakesh Kumar Jain following a public interest litigation filed by a lawyer.

The petition had said that at least five schools were running classes from unsafe buildings in Ludhiana district. It sought that students of these schools be shifted to safer buildings.

District education officials, in their affidavit to the high court, said that the unsafe rooms were not being used or had been repaired.
