Thiruvananthapuram, April 5 (IANS) Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Friday asked the opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) not to “politicise” family issues, warning it of a “heavy price”.
“If they continue to politicise family issues, then they will have to pay a heavy price,” said Chandy at a party meeting in his hometown Kottayam. He was referring to the manner in which the CPI-M has taken up the issues that cropped up between film star-turned-politician K.B. Ganesh Kumar, who early this week resigned as minister after his estranged wife Yamini Thankachi filed a police complaint accusing him of domestic violence.
This issue, taken up by the CPI-M, led to unruly scenes between the government and the Left opposition in the floor of the Kerala assembly.
When the house met Wednesday, the opposition demanded that Chandy quit, alleging he used his official residence to conspire against the hapless wife of his former cabinet colleague and warned that they will not budge from their stand when the assembly reconvenes next week.
Meanwhile, multiple rounds of discussions began in the chamber of the Thiruvananthapuram Chief Judicial Magistrate Hema Latha Friday afternoon after the estranged couple was called in.
Hearing Thankachi’s petition accusing Ganesh Kumar of ill-treating her both physically and mentally, the CJM called both of them into her chamber and held four rounds of talks, first with the counsel for the estranged couple and the couple.
Then she spoke to each of the couple in private and then again called their counsel. After more than four hours of conciliatory talks, the magistrate asked the couple to return on Friday next and advised them not to speak to the media on what transpired.
