Solan: Former President APJ Abdul Kalam conferred 440 degrees and 11 gold medals to the top students from various streams at the first convocation ceremony of Shoolini University here today.
Before the convocation, Dr. Kalam inaugurated the newly constructed state-of-the-art Yogananda Library in the University and presented four books authored by him for the library. Later, Dr. Kalam also inaugurated the website of the university.
Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and other dignitaries of the state were also present alongside the ‘Missile Man’ on the occasion.
Dr Kalam distributed as many as 440 degrees (292 in person and 148 in absentia) to students from various subjects streams including, M.Phil Biotechnology, Chemistry, Botany, Microbiology and Environment Sciences, MSc Biotech, Chemistry, Botany, Microbiology and Environment Sciences, MPharma and MBA, to name a few.
Dr. Kalam also conferred gold medals to 11 toppers in their respective subjects.
Dr. Kalam addressing the first convocation of Shoolini University said “India needs to graduate into knowledge and innovative research to emerge as a leader in real terms.”
Talking at length about importance of research (a subject close to his heart) he said, “research leads to quality teaching and quality teaching imparted to the youth in turn enriches the research.” “The purpose of real education is to lead the youth to outshine in the selected field,” he added.
Speaking about Shoolini University Dr Kalam said, “He is happy about how Shoolini University has adopted a research driven model and is providing value based quality education to students of all sections of society.” “Shoolini University should set a target to be amongst the top 100 global universities in coming years,” he added.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Chief Minister Shri Virbhadra Singh expressed gratitude to Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam for his presence in the convocation.
According to a few students who received their degrees and medals from Dr Kalam, “this was a lifetime achievement for them.”
Some students told Hillpost that “receiving their degrees from the Missile Man himself was dream come true, they couldn’t have asked for anything better on this auspicious occasion.”
Former President APJ Abdul Kalam reached Solan yesterday at about 8:30 p.m. by road from Chandigarh. He made it to the State only for the convocation ceremony in Shoolini University.
Shoolini University is a premier education facility about 14 km from Solan. The university was ranked number 2 in Biotechnology by BioSpectrum 2012.
