Srinagar: A militant was killed Tuesday in an ongoing gunfight with the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district, an official said.
“Following specific information that a group of militants was hiding in some houses in Saidhpora village on the outskirts of Sopore town (in Baramulla district), special operations group (SOG) of police, 22 Rashtriya Rifles and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a joint operation,” a senior police officer told.
“The search party surrounded two houses in the village after which the hiding militants opened…fire on the security forces, triggering an encounter which is still going on,” the officer said.
“So far, one militant has been killed. We are carrying out the operation cautiously to ensure that no…damage to civilian life or property takes places,” he said.
Last week, security forces had killed three guerrillas in the Cherhar forests in the same police district.
It must be mentioned that Sopore sub-division was upgraded as a police district in January 2010 to fight militancy in the area.
Sopore has traditionally been seen as a stronghold of the separatist sentiments in the Kashmir Valley.
