New Delhi: The Army today felicitated its 14 sportsmen who represented the country at the London Olympics. Army Chief Gen Bikram Singh, promoted the silver medallist Subedar Viay Kumar to the rank of Subedar Major. He was also given a Rs 30 Lakh cash award along with a Commendation Card.
The other thirteen Olympians too were felicitated by the Army Chief and given a cash award of Rs 1 Lakh each, alongwith Commendation Cards.
Speaking on the occasion, the Gen Singh praised the performance of all the sportsmen, as also the tremendous progress made by the Army’s Mission Olympics, which was established in 2001. He promised exposure of all athletes to conditions prevalent at forthcoming international events by organising their training at these locations or at locations akin to these within the country.
He also praised the officials and support staff of the Mission Olympics Wing on their efforts. Promising state of the art training facilities at Army Sport Nodes, he also assured the sportsmen of the organisation’s whole hearted support for furtherance of their aspirations.
