Shimla: With a police search operation of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) boys hostels under court directions finding weapons like kukris in rooms and an occupancy of about 2000 students against a capacity of only 810, the High Court, unmindful of examinations being held, issued stern directions for the students to take all their belongings and clear the hostel rooms within 24 hours.
The division bench of Chief Justice Kurian Joseph and Justice Dharam Chand Chaudhary on Thursday directed a complete cleansing of the boys hostels.
The university registrar was directed to submit a report to the court by Friday morning about how many students report for removal of their personal belongings from the rooms.
Inspector general police has been directed to supervise the operation along with the hostel wardens.
The university registrar was also authorized by the court to invite applications from students who intended to occupy hostels for completing their examinations and on-going studies.
Students would have to submit their applications in person with relevant documents of examination date sheet and need. Research scholars have to submit their applications signed by their guides or head of departments.
Controller examination has been directed to present the examination date sheet before the court.
The courts harsh orders have come in a petition by Lallan Rai, who had placed before the court that students were facing difficulties after the authorities ordered closure of hostels even though final examinations being conducted.
Police on having conducted a search operation of the hostels under court orders on Wednesday, let the judges know that objectionable materials, including knives, khukris, iron rods, lathi etc. were removed.
The court was also informed that occupancy in all rooms was more than double the capacity.
Against an allotted strength of 810 boys, there were about 2000 students living in the hostels, the police report to the court mentioned.
Since the inception of the university in 1971, the authorities for the first time have ordered the hostels be vacated as a direct fallout of the violent clashes between ABVP and SFI having taken place about a week ago.

Grt !! wht else to expect from this system ?? HPU always leads by example. !! Is this right to jeopardise the Careers of many students who are not at all involved in any political or rampage activities ?? Here comes the HP police ” 2000 boys blah blah..knives removed” why does the HP police keep its eyes shut when all this starts to happen ?. Why are HPU admins lathargic enough to let non hostelers reside in the Hostels ? Shuting the hostels down at the eleventh hour of examination is a childish and most stupid action on part of any of our “HIGHLY ESTEEMED” bodies be it the incapable HP admin or the Court. If my wrds are reaching these ppl ; With all due respect its veru easy to sit in offices and invoke redical actions on the students coz they are just students … WHY WAS THE LEGISTATIVE ASEMBLY NOT VACATED and LOCKED DOWN AFTER BUNCH OF HOOLIGAN NETAS TARNISHED ITS GLORY BY HAVING IN HOUSE FIGHTS ??? …
Its all a sham and a hasty action and its indictive of how incapable our systems are in preventing and then controling the matters related to HPU
Its not Just the HPU that has hostels you go any where else and you would find strict control over Hostel premises by the respective admins. Why the hell are these elections not banned in the HPU ?.
Any ways the damage has been to the name of HPU, its property and most importantly it inocent students. All the very best my fellow frnds and DOWN WITH THE INCAPABLE SYSTEMS.
