Crucial Shimla municipal poll to be held on May 27

Shimla: Being considered as an indicator of voter preferences before the general assembly poll is held later in the year; the state election commission on Friday declared May 27 for holding the Shimla municipal corporation poll that is to be fought on party symbols for the first time.

Notifying the election schedule the election commission has granted three days starting from May 5th for filing of nomination papers even as it has evoked the model of conduct till conclusion of the elections on May 30.

A spokesman for the commission announced that scrutiny of papers would take place on 9th Man and withdrawal of candidatures would be allowed till May 11.

Final list of contestants with symbols would be displayed on May 11, while the list of polling stations would be put out on May 5.

The vote count for councilor, deputy mayor and mayor would start on May 28 and would continue till the process is completed, the state election commission spokesman said. Result shall be declared immediately after the counting, he added.

While CPI (M) has already declared its candidates for mayor and deputy mayor positions, BJP and Congress were yet to settle upon whom to pit forward as several claimants have put forth their candidatures for consideration before the parties.
