Shimla: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Himachal Pradesh Friday faced flak when its own legislator slammed it for promoting illegal mining and corruption.
Speaking in the support of budget proposals presented by Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, Rohru legislator Khushi Ram Balnatah criticised the government for its failure to check illegal mining in his constituency.
“The mining in the Pabbar river in Rohru area is going on unabated. At one place, a road has caved in owing to mining. Instead of taking action against the violators, the Public Works Department (PWD) officers are facilitating them,” he said.
“Let there be a strict action against erring officers. ‘Lagna chahiyey ki sarkar hai aur kam kar rahi hai’ (It should be visible that there is a government and which is functioning),” he said.
He also criticised the government for delaying development works in his constituency.
“I had stopped pursuing it with the government,” he said, while referring to the construction of a bridge, whose foundation stone was laid in Rohru in 2009.
