Dharamsala: Handing out data about Tibetans who till date had self immolated in protest against Chinese oppression in Tibet, Thubten Samdup from the International Campaign for Tibet here said, we have confirmed that till date 23 Tibetans have self-immolated themselves February 27, 2009.
Samdup claimed that 15 of them were known to have died because of the burns.
Of the recorded 23 self immolation incidences, 22 have occurred after March 16, 2011. Nineteen of them were men and 3 of them were women.
Thubten said that 16 of the 23 were from Ngaba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan province, 3 from Kardze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan province (One monk from Nyitso monastery, one monk from Kardze monastery and one nun from Tawu)
Five of the 23 monks who self immolated were from Kirti monastery in Ngaba, he added.
