Srinagar : Traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu highway was halted Friday after many vehicles got stuck in the snow in the Bannihal sector of the road.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) said the pile up began after a vehicle was hit by a snowball at Shaitani Nallah in the highway’s Bannihal sector.
“As the vehicle got stuck, others behind it stopped because their fuel got frozen in the extreme chill,” BRO Brigadier T.P.S. Rawat told IANS.
“We are removing the vehicles to clear the highway. We are also trying to restore two-way traffic,” he said.
Many vehicles carrying passengers and essential supplies were stranded on the highway.
The over 300-km highway is the landlocked Kashmir Valley’s only road link with the rest of India.
