Police baton charge protesters in Srinagar

Srinagar : Police Saturday used batons to disperse a group of protesters in this Jammu and Kashmir summer capital.

The protesters were marching towards the Gaw Kadal Bridge here when the police used batons to disperse them. The protests were part of the separatists programme to commemorate the killings of 52 people in firing by security forces in Gaw Kadal area in 1990.

The protesters again regrouped in Maisuma locality where Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik was leading a procession towards the Gaw Kadal Bridge.

“Section 144 of the criminal procedure code is in force in the city. Assembly of five or more people is illegal. Police have intervened to restore order,” a police officer said.
