Fog claims 15 lives in Uttar Pradesh

Agra : Fifteen people have been killed in accidents in Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad, Mathura, Agra, Mainpuri and Hathras districts as dense fog enveloped the entire region.

Cement dealer Mukesh Kumar of Mathura was killed in the early hours of Wednesday morning when his car hit a divider and then a tree on way to Delhi.

Railway lineman Meghram, who was patrolling a track, was hit by a train in Mathura and died on the spot, police said.

In Mainpuri district, three friends on a bike were Wednesday morning crushed to death by a vehicle which is still being traced by the police.

Two people were killed in Hathras town while six people became victims of road accidents in Firozabad district Wednesday. In Shikohabad area, two people in a Maruti van were killed when their car collided with a truck.

For the past four days, normal life has been paralysed because of the thick blanket of fog, quite unusual for this time of the year.

Agra District Magistrate Ajay Chauhan Thursday ordered change in school timings. Primary schools will open at 9 a.m. and those not following the new schedule would be fined, he said.

The foggy conditions prevailed till Wednesday afternoon, affecting tourist arrivals as a large number of vehicles from Delhi were stranded and moving at a snail’s pace.

However, the fog cleared Thursday, giving some relief to people.
