South Africa denies visa to the Dalai Lama

Dharamsala : The Dalai Lama has cancelled his visit to South Africa Tuesday after Pretoria failed to issue him a visa , apparently under pressure from China .

The Tibetan spiritual leader had been invited by Desmond Tutu to deliver a peace lecture on Tutu’s 80 th birthday .

“The Dalai Lama was scheduled to leave on October 6 but visas have not been granted so far ,” said a statement of issued by the Dalai Lama’s office .

The Tibetan government-in-exile has expressed disappointment that a sovereign country like South Africa has given into pressure from China .

South Africa had denied a visa to the Dalai Lama in 2009 for fear of angering China .
