Tripoli: Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, captured by National Transitional Council (NTC) fighters in his hometown Sirte after a skirmish Thursday, later died of his wounds, an NTC field commander told Xinhua.
The commander, Mohemmed Buras Ali Al-Maknee, had earlier said that a group of fighters from the western Libyan city of Misrata captured Gaddafi, who had been severely injured, in Sirte.
Gaddafi’s birthplace is Sirte.
Reports said the fallen leader was injured in both legs during a fierce battle at Sirte.
The claim on Gaddafi’s death has not yet been officially confirmed by the NTC higher command.
Gaddafi, who came to power in Libya in 1969, was overthrown in an uprising that began in February.
