Army officer, 5 militants killed in North Kashmir gunfight

Srinagar: Five militants, two policemen and an army officer have been killed in an ongoing fierce gunfight in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, taking the toll in the battle which began two days ago to eight, officials said Wednesday.

An army lieutenant who was injured in the gun-battle died of his injuries Wednesday, police said. Earlier reports had said the officer was an army captain.

Police also revised the figure of the three police personnel, including a special police officer (SPO) reported to be killed to two, saying the SPO was only injured.

Police and soldiers of Army’s 18 Grenadiers Monday laid siege around Awathkul forest area falling under the jurisdiction of police station Kralpora following reports of the presence of separatist guerrillas there, a police officer said.

The holed-up militants opened fire at the security forces, triggering the gun-battle.
