Dharamsala : With the handing over of political power to his successor Lobsang Sangay the Dalai Lama said Monday that his long-cherished aspiration was accomplished.
Sangay,43, took over a Prime Minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile on Monday in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh.
“Lobsang Sangay has become the first Tibetan political leader elected democratically and vested with full political authority and responsibility,†said the Dalai Lama.
“Today is a proud day for the Tibetan people who have participated in democratic elections,my most cherished aspiration has been fulfilled,†he said.
“Tibetans in Tibet are not allowed to even express their views and opinions freely,let alone participate in democratic elections,but I am sure they will be proud of the steps that we have taken towards the future when they hear about it,†the Dalai Lama said.
He said today was an important day in the more than 2000 year old long history of Tibet.
