Dalai Lama to open IGNOU Tibetan studies centre

Dharamsala : Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama will inaugurate the Centre for Tibetan studies at the Indira Gandhi National Open University(IGNOU) next week.

“IGNOU will host its 24 th convocation on September 5, the university will also confer honoris causa on the Tibetan leader,” the Tibetan government-in-exile quoted IGNOU’s official website, Tuesday.

The Centre will help preserve the endangered Tibetan culture in India and Nepal.It will develop and launch BA,MA,M.Phil and Ph.D programmes of study on Tibetan studies,Buddhist philosophy and Theology.

The degrees will be issued jointly by IGNOU and the Central University of Tibetan studies(CUTS).The Tibetan government-in-exile has already presented a cheque of Rs 500,000 to the university as token seed money to initiate setting of the Centre.
