Shimla: Police hauled up two persons in separate cases for possession of illegal drugs and recovered 3.2 Kgs of charas from them. Acting upon intelligence provided by the miliatry, police on Tuesday raided the premises of one Sanjay Verma, a resident of Chirmbo village in Theog and recovered 1.7 Kgs of contraband charas from his possession.

In a separate raid, a special investigation unit from Shimla out on a patrol, on Monday recovered 1.5 Kgs of charas from one Sewa Ram at Nogli on the Shimla-Rampur highway. Both Sanjay Verma and Sewa Ram, a resident of Tharla village in Nirmand tehsil of Kullu have been arrested.

District police superintendent Sonal Agnihotri said that cases under Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act have been made out against the two persons apprehended with the contraband drugs.

Police and anti-narcotic agencies, over the years have been trying hard to contain the illegal trade in opium and charas. Police authorities say that Himachal has the dubious record of being counted as the largest producer of illegal charas in the country, accounting for as much as 25 percent of the contraband trade.
