A gala light show in the shape of 12 feet long red ribbon was organised at the Community Care Centre, Tanda today, on the eve of World AIDS Control Day (December 1), to sensitize people to live positively with HIV/AIDS.
On the occasion local people, Health Staff, Students and Team of Gunjan Organization for Community Development participated in a Candle Light vigil as a mark of solidarity for rights of PLHIV (People Living With HIV).
A noted HIV AIDS expert, Dr. Kuldeep Sharma, shared that the theme of World AIDS Day Campaign this year is â€Universal Access and Human Rightsâ€
He said that easy availability and access to quality confidential services of HIV prevention, Treatment Care and Support without stigma and discrimination, and respect for human rights of marginalized communities is the key to halt the HIV epidemic.
Kangra District AIDS Control Programme Officer, Dr. Rajesh Sood told that HIV is no more a medical issue. “Rather, it impacts all sectors of development, and leads to poverty. Hence Himachal Pradesh State AIDS Control Society has embarked on a aim based project to build the capacity of front line grass root functionaries like AnganBari workers and Self Help Groups in the districts. In return, these will raise awareness on ICTC services, promote non judgmental attitudes and support the People Living with HIV in income generation activities,’’Dr. Sood said.
Representatives from PRI, Positive Networks, Staff and Students also exchanged views on the issue. They appealed to the society to join the state wide campaign from 1st to 25th December 2010.
A candle light formation was also presented on the occasion to engage attention of all sections of the society on this burning issue.
