Shimla: The Kinnauri Shawl has been granted a patent under Geographical Indications (GIs) of Goods Act, 1999 from the Registrar, Geographical Indications, Government of India.
“The Kinnauri Shawl has been assigned Certificate No. 125 and Geographical Indication No 149 by the Registrar, Geographical Indications, Government of India, said a spokesman of State Council for Science, Technology & Environment, HP who have been able to get the registered done.
Besides the Kinnauri Shawl, the Kullu Shawl, Kangra Tea and Chamba Rumal are registered under Geographical Indication Act.
A registration of the Kinnauri Shawl under GI Act would prevent any unauthorized production, imitation as well as misuse of the brand name of Kinnauri Shawl originating from a place, other than the place of origin, said the spokesman.
Any unauthorized use and infringement of the registered Geographical Indication, by producers, other than from the place of origin of these products could result in maximum of three years imprisonment and maximum fine of Rs 200,000 under the Act, he warned.
