Shimla: With no dissident defying the party code of filing nomination papers for contesting the state party president election, the HP Congress Committee (HPPC) adopted a single line resolution authorizing national president Sonia Gandhi to name the new president.
A party spokesman said that the resolution for authorizing Sonia Gandhi to name the next president was moved by Vidya Stokes, leader of the congress legislator party. The resolution was adopted unanimously, he said.
Earlier outgoing president Kaul Singh had moved a resolution congratulating Sonia on being elected national congress president for the 4th consecutive time.
Union steel minister Virbhadra Singh also did attend the state congress meeting.
On Saturday, congressmen had caused a flutter, with reports suggesting that three potential candidates Ram Lal Thakur, Chander Kumar Chaudhary and Sujan Singh Pathania had collected nomination papers from the congress office with the intent of contesting the election.
Speaking to media persons at a function, Virbhadra Singh said that he had written to Rajni Patel, party incharge for Himachal on Saturday asking for adopting of a resolution about authorizing party president Sonia Gandhi to name the new president.
He denied that he had any role in 3 congress leaders having picked up nomination papers for the election.
With Kaul Singh seeking another term, there is opposition from the Virbhadra Camp to his re-election but his candidature is being backed by Stokes and commerce minister Anand Sharma.
