Shimla: The centuries old Dharkoti Palace, in Kothkhai tehsil was reduced to ashes on Monday as fire fighters tried throughout the day to save the about 60 room heritage building, which included a temple within its premises.

Tameshwar Thakur, SHO Kotkhai over telephone to ‘My Himachal’ revealed that smoke was noticed emanating from the building at about 11.30 a.m. Before help could arrive, flames had erupted and since there was a lot of wood uses in its construction, containing the fire proved difficult.

The owners Rana Raghubir Singh, unable to assess the heritage value of the structure estimated the cost at about Rs 10 crore, police said.

The temple within the palace is reported to contain family gold, jewels and precious idols, have all been destroyed in the inferno. Â
