Shimla: The Himachal cabinet today decided to take disciplinary action against some officials for failing to perform their duty responsibility for regulation law and order during the Naina Devi fair in which 143 people had died in a stampede.
Unanimously adopting the inquiry report of divisional commissioner, Mandi that was constituted for the going into August 3 tragedy, the cabinet that met here under the chair of chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal decided to implement the recommendations made therein.
Disciplinary action has been recommended against officials deployed in sector 4 and 5 to oversee the regulation, law and order, during the fair.
The cabinet also accepted recommendations to regulate pilgrimage activity at the major temples, shrines and festivals. To avoid overcrowding pilgrims in batches of 200 would be permitted entrance.
The government would acquire three properties at Naina Devi to create more space to enter and exit the temple, said an official spokesman. Medical facilities, better amenities would be provided near temple shrines which attract large pilgrims and quick reaction teams would be constituted for meeting emergency situations.
The cabinet also approved change of name of Environment and Scientific Technologies Department to Department of Environment, Science and Technology.
