Shimla: The silt level of Satluj River crossed the 5000 parts per million (PPM) forcing the Nathpa Jhakri hydropower station to shut down the generation plant in the afternoon.
AK Bansal, General Manager Nathpa-Jhakri plant, said that the snow melt in the higher regions has increased and the flow of the river is touching 1100 cumecs from 700 cumecs to 800 cumecs since few days. However, the main reason behind the high silt level is still unknown.
He further added that the Jhakri turbines are designed to withstand corrosion for silt levels upto 5000 PPM and once the level crosses the level, the machines are turned off to save any damage to the country’s largest hydel energy plant.
