Institute of Disability Management and Rehabilitation to come up at Shimla

The state government has approved of Institute of Disability Management and Rehabilitation at Shimla which would be opened by J.M. Institute of Speech and Hearing, Patna, Mrs Sarveen Chaudahry, the Social Justice and Empowerment Minister said.

The institute was recommended by Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. The Institute had been working in this cause from some 25 years and has been supported by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment for its various projects. The organization has also been running Human Resource Development Programmes since many years.

The step has been taken after a survey by ICDS wing of Social Justice and Empowerment Department, in which 52206 persons with disabilities were identified in the state up to December, 2006. The organization has requested for some 10 acres of land in Shimla as well as recommendation of the H.P. University for affiliation to its various courses.

Institute of Speech & Hearing was established in the year 1982 with the aim to rehabilitate persons with developmental disorders and to mainstream them into the society with dignity and productivity. The institute has achieved distinction, recognition and reputation of national level in imparting high quality training programmes in disability management and rehabilitation under recognition from RCI, statutory body of Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Government of India and other Universities in the country. Human resource development programme was started in the year 1995 in the area of special education. Hundred of our alumini are serving in all parts of the country and abroad. The Institute started the degree level courses in Audiology and speech language Pathology, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy from the academic session 2007. There was a great demand from our alumini, parents and the organizations engaged in disability management and rehabilitation to start these courses. The Institute started all these courses under the “College of Rehabilitation Sciences” with its total administrative control. The institute has acquired 25 acres of land on Patna, Muzaffarpur highway to house this college in an ideal academic environment.
