Shimla: “The left parties concern about the Indo-US nuclear deal has been duly addressed,†said Anand Sharma, Minister of State for External Affairs, even as Prakash Karat, CPI(M) general secretary mounted a fresh threat to pull down the Manmohan Singh government unless the talks with IAEA were not called off by December.
Sharma at a media conference dismissed reports that there was any pact with the left parties of deferring the nuclear stand off till the elections in Gujarat and Himachal.
He said “India would have to join the global mainstream over the nuclear issue for demand for power is going to increase five fold over the next decade and fossil fuels cannot meet this increased demand.â€
When quizzed over the reported threat by Karat to ‘either call of talks with IAEA over nuclear deal or be prepared for election’ Sharma said, “he has his own opinion, we have ours.â€
“Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson cannot compromise on national interests over political expediency,†he countered.
“The UPA government and congress consider that India’s interests can best be served ending its nuclear isolation and joining the mainstream globally,†he said.
Congress and UPA feel that supreme national interests can only be served by India ending its long years of nuclear apartheid and reintegrate globally on the issue,” said Sharma.
