Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Governor, V.S. Kokje today attended the State level function organized on the occasion of World Disabled Day where he was welcomed by Prem Kumar, Principal Secretary, Social Justice and Empowerment.
At the function he stressed upon the necessity to bring disabled people into the mainstream and provide them equality in the society.
Governor said that Rs. 640 lacs were being spent on providing disability relief allowance at the rate of Rs.200 per month to 25416 disabled persons every year in the State. He said that Himachal Pradesh Minority Corporation was also providing loans on cheap instalments to disabled persons for starting their self-employment ventures. He said that special employment cell has also been set up in employment office to facilitate them.
Talking about the institutions for deaf, dumb and blind children at Dhali and Sundernagar, he said that these institutions have been upgraded up to 10th class. Further he added that awareness among the people was very important and their behaviour should be sensitive towards disabled people. He also said that stress should be laid upon imparting vocational training to such persons so that they could be made financially independent.
Kokje also gave away prizes to the disabled children who won Gold and Bronze medals in 12th Special Olympics World Summer Sports 2007 at Shanghai in China besides the winners of various other sports events.
