Shimla: At the 15th convocation of Himachal Pradesh University, as many as 239 Ph.D’s, 306 gold medals and 1 D Litt was conferred by chancellor VS Kokje, here today. Among those who received the Ph.D degrees were some highly placed officers of the state government and teachers of affiliated colleges as well as an acutely physically challenged student.
Speaking on the occasion chancellor Kokje, emphasized the need to develop human capital through advancement of education. He said that while there was an abundance of information available, what was required was to create the ability to process this information to generate knowledge and wisdom. He laid stress on the issues of expansion, inclusion and excellence in higher education as advocated by the National Knowledge Commission and said that this was the need of the hour.
Vice-chancellor Anil Wilson in his address said that education other than catering to the needs of the day should also fulfill the perennial aspirations of the human spirit. “The development of technical education at the cost of liberal arts and sciences was a matter of serious concern. While society needed technicians, it also needed artists, scientists, philosophers, litt-rateurs, who could constant challenge and change society,” said Wilson.
