NAHAN JUNE 5: In an unprecedented incident last night at about 11.30 P.M. four policeman of Nahan Police Station were assaulted by some miscreants near petrol pump here. As per information police party which was returning after a patrolling round was attacked with iron rods, lathies and pipes by the residents of nearby locality after a scuffle of police party with the four boys of the area who were under the influence of liquor and had blocked the main road by parking their motorcycle in the middle of road.
Inspector Khazana Ram, Station House Officer of Nahan Police Station, Sub Inspector Subhsh Chand, Driver of Police Van Rajender Singh and Constable Naseeb Chand were badly thrashed by a mob of around twenty persons. They received mainly head injuries and other multiple injuries on the different parts of the body as they made several attempts to hit back the assailants.
SHO Khajana Ram however managed to reach in the district Hospital along with his injured staff members by driving the police van himself. After reaching in the Hospital he around mid night informed additional S.P. Rani Bindu Sachdeva and S.P. Mr. R. P. Singh who was at Shimla in connection with some departmental meetings. Additional S.P. along with the police party reached in the Hospital and supervised the medical aid being given to the injured cops.
Due to severe head injuries condition of three officers was serious. Constable Nasseb Chand had deep head injuries with several injuries on other parts of the body and was in very critical condition, after giving first aid treatment at the District Hospital here, he was referred to PGI Chandigarh by the Hospital authorities. Rest of cops were being treated for their injuries in the district Hospital, one of them had been kept under active observation due to heavy head injuries.
In the wee hours today a police party having large numbers of cops led by Ms Rani Bindu Sachdeva, Additional S.P. Sirmour combed the locality around Petrol Pump and rounded up three persons in this connection. There was resentment in the police force after this assault as they say that it was rare example in the history of Sirmour and was result of protection to the miscreants by the vote politics for the past several years. They wanted strict action in this matter.
Giving the details of the incident Ms Rani Sachdeva, Additional S.P. Sirmour said that a case under section 353, 332, 147 and 148 IPC has been registered in the local police station against more than 12 persons. Four assailants who were identified by the injured SHO had been named in the FIR. She said that most of the assailants had fled from their homes after the attack. Police parties had been dispatched to nab them. She said that three persons who were rounded up in the wee hours today had given valuable information in this regard. She said that a number of persons involved in this attack had criminal record.
Narrating the incident she said that when police party led by SHO Nahan was returning from the patrolling of the area in a police van they found main road blocked near petrol pump. Four youths had parked their motorcycle in the middle of the road and were under the influence of liquor. When police party asked them to remove the motorcycle from the main road, reluctant boys indulged in hot exchanges with the police party, resultantly there was a scuffle between boys and police party when police tried to get hold of them. Three boys ran from the scene while one was caught by the police. Within a few minutes, the boys along with more than ten other assailants appeared on the scene and attacked the police party with iron rods, lathies and pipes. They succeeded in releasing the boy from the possession of police and ran away after badly injuring the police party who were in police dress and traveling in the official vehicle of police.
