Congress alleges scam in Goa bridge construction

Panaji, June 18 (IANS) The Congress Tuesday alleged a scam in the proposed construction of a Sydney harbour-style bridge being built across the Tiracol river 50 km north of here.

Addressing a press conference in Panaji, Congress spokesperson Reginaldo Lourenco said the bridge was being built purely to facilitate an upcoming golf course at the Tiracol village beyond the river.

“For whom is this Sydney harbour-style bridge being built? There are only a dozen houses in that village and both the golf course developer and the government are trying to evict them,” Lourenco said.

The relatively pristine Tiracol village on the Goa-Maharashtra border has been in controversy with villagers protesting the takeover of their land for the golf course project being built to the globally-acknowledged Professional Golf Association standards.

The proposed construction steel arch bridge is on the lines of the iconic 80-year-old Sydney Bridge.

“This bridge is only meant to be a backdrop for the golf course, which is spread across Goa and Maharashtra,” Lourenco said, adding that the bridge construction scam was being masterminded by the BJP-led coalition government in the state.
