Panaji (Goa), July 2 (IANS) The sixth nationwide Economic Census will have a special focus on traditional occupations and will aim to track down how many Indians have actually given up their ancestral trades in favour of modern occupations.
V.B. Saxena, joint director of the Goa government’s Department for Planning, Statistics and Evaluation, Tuesday said the effort was a part of a central government’s initiative to create a consolidated data bank on the status of traditional occupations and why they could have lost favour with its practitioners over the years.
“The government is emphasising on traditional occupations with people moving away from it and heading to urban areas,” Saxena said while speaking to reporters after a workshop for the census officials at the Goa International Centre on the outskirts of the capital.
Nearly 1,000 census officials will brave the Goa monsoons and visit nearly four lakh business establishments seeking information, including data about the occupation the entrepreneur’s ancestors were involved in.
“The entrepreneurs will be specifically asked what their traditional occupation is and the reasons why they or their ancestors had to leave it,” Saxena said.
The state government’s department for Planning, Statistics and Evaluation is working in sync with the Union Ministry for Statistics and Programme Implementation, which is conducting the sixth nationwide Economic Census.
The Economic Census operation in Goa would begin from August.
