Kolkata, June 27 (IANS) The CPI-M Thursday accused Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy of being the “mastermind” in letting loose a reign of terror over a crucial belt across two districts ahead of next month’s panchayat polls and demanded deployment of central paramilitary forces to ensure free and fair elections.
“In an entire belt of North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas districts, around Basanti Road, Roy has been masterminding an operation by roping in anti-socials to make the area CPI-M free.
“They want to capture Zilla Parishad constituencies along the road. Lot of our leaders have been roughed up. 229 candidates cannot reach their constituencies,” said Communist Party of India-Marxist state secretariat member Gautam Deb.
Deb said the Left Front has given deputations to the home secretary and the State Election Commission asking for proper steps.
“To conduct free and fair polls, central paramilitary force has to be deployed. They have to conduct a march,” he said.
Alleging that Left Front candidates were not being allowed to campaign in several areas, the former minister said a special writ petition will be filed in the Calcutta High Court seeking directives to the SEC and the administration so that the contestants could canvas for votes.
“If there is no change in the situation, we will have to hit the streets and organise road blockades. We won’t gift so many seats to the Trinamool as a bouquet,” Deb said.
