Kolkata, June 3 (IANS) The West Bengal Human Rights Commission Monday directed the city police to conduct a probe into the alleged rape of an Irish woman in Kolkata and submit a report within three weeks.
“Taking cognizance of media reports, the commission Monday directed the police commissioner to conduct a thorough probe in the matter and submit a report within three weeks,” said commission Joint Secretary Sujay Kumar Haldar.
The 21-year-old Irish woman, working for a Darjeeling-based NGO, and residing in the city, June 1 lodged a complaint that she was raped by her male friend at his residence in the city’s Kalighat area.
The accused, Sujoy Mitra, was arrested on the same day and presented before a city court Sunday, which remanded him to police custody till June 5.
The rights panel earlier had expressed concern over the growing instances sexual assaults on women in the state.
