Government Threatens to Cancel Agreements Of Un-executed Small Hydro Projects

Shimla: For failure to execute small hydro projects on time, the Himachal government has threatened to trash existing agreements and constitute a single window system for allotment of such projects in order to introduce transparency.

Chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal speaking at a function after commissioning a 5 MW hydro power plant at Tosh, in the interiors of Manikaran valley in Kullu district said that the state was considering setting up a separate transmission corporation for evacuating power generated in the state.

The 5 MW Tosh Mini Hydro Electric Plant is a private sector project that has been constructed by Sai Engineering Foundation.

After the turbines were switched on by the chief minister for commercial generation, the company also organized blood donation, eye and medical treatment camp on the occasion to mark the birthday celebrations of Shri Satya Sai Baba.

The chief minister said that 80 small hydro electric projects capable to generate 190 MW of power had so far been allotted to the independent power producers (IPPs) in Kullu district alone.

The state had set a target of generating 1000 MW of power from small hydro power plants, he said.

In ten months 30 MW of additional power generation capacity had been added into the system and an additional 40 MW would become available in the next four months said Dhumal.

Taking a serious note of unfulfilled commitments, the chief minister said that the government would review projects that had crossed their time limits and after obtaining legal opinion would terminate them. These projects would be re-allotted to entrepreneurs who are serious of executing them, he added.
