Havana, May 16 (IANS) After a four-year absence, Cuba will send a team to participate in America group III of Davis Cup tennis to be held June 17-22 in La Paz, Bolivia, the National Tennis Commission (NTC) announced here.
NTC Commissioner Juan Antonio Ramos said Cuba’s squad comprises four players – national champion Randy Blanco, William Dorante, Roberto Cruz, and Alberto Victor Fernandez. They will compete in both singles and doubles events, Xinhua reports.
Ramos said the last Cuban participation at the Davis Cup was in 2009, represented by Dorante.
“It is a fact that gives us prestige before the International Tennis Federation (ITF), motivates the players and gives us the opportunity to develop our sport,” the NTC said Wednesday.
This will be the 102nd edition of Davis Cup. Besides the hosting country and Cuba, Bahamas, Bermuda, Costa Rica, Honduras, Jamaica, Panama and Paraguay have confirmed their participation in the La Paz event.
The winners will graduate to group II of the American Area for the 2014 season.
