New Delhi, April 26 (IANS) A Delhi court Friday sent suspected Hizbul Mujahideen militant Sayyed Liyaqat Shah, arrested for allegedly conspiring to carry out terror attacks in the the national capital, to National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) custody for five days.
The Special NIA court of District Judge I.S. Mehta, during an in-chamber hearing, allowed the NIA’s plea seeking Shah’s custody till May 1.
The NIA Thursday filed an application in the court seeking five-day custody of Shah. Informed sources said that the agency contended it needed to take Shah to Sunauli border, one of India-Nepal crossing points near Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur, from where he was allegedly arrested by the special cell of Delhi Police on March 20.
Shah, who has been lodged in Tihar jail following his arrest, Thursday alleged that the officials of special cell of Delhi Police has tortured him and beaten him up.
Tihar Jail authorities, which was asked by the court to submit a medical report of Shah, submitted it and told the court he has been undergoing treatment in jail and his vital parameters are normal.
There are conflicting claims over Shah, 45, a resident of Dardpora village in Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
Delhi Police booked Shah for waging war against the country claiming he was planning to carry out terror attacks in the national capital to avenge the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, while the Jammu and kashmir Police said he was returning to take advantage of the state’s militant rehabilitation policy.
The home ministry March 28 asked the NIA to probe the case.
