Panaji, April 26 (IANS) The Goa government will work out a compensation package for 29 fishermen — of whom five are missing and one is dead — involved in a mid-sea collision with an Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ship, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said here Friday.
Parrikar was speaking to reporters following a cabinet meeting here.
“The incident occurred beyond Goa’s boundaries and the Coast Guard is investigating the matter. The state government is in touch with them,” Parrikar said.
Goa Governor B.V. Wanchoo, in a statement Friday, condoled the death of a sailor and expressed concern about the five missing fishermen onboard the Goa-registered trawler Sea Messiah.
“We are working on a package for the families of those injured and deceased,” Parrikar said.
The Coast Guard Friday said the trawler Thursday morning collided with one of its patrol vessels ICSG Vaibhaw, which was patrolling the area when the accident occurred.
“A board of inquiry had been constituted to get to the bottom of the matter,” an ICG spokesperson said.
The trawler broke into two pieces and sank within minutes after the ICG patrol boat rammed into it Thursday morning around 47 nautical miles off Goa.
Other fishing trawlers in the vicinity sent out distress signals to the Coast Guard.
The Navy diverted INS Suvarna and INS Koswari, which were around 130 nautical miles from where the fishing vessel sank, to launch a rescue mission.
While 23 sailors were brought to the shore, some with injuries, five fishermen were still missing. A fisherman’s body was recovered by a lookout helicopter crew.
