Bangalore, April 4 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Thursday stuck to her stand that the death of a Students Federation of India (SFI) activist in Kolkata was “an accident” and not “due to police assault”.
“Why, for what purpose,” she shot back when reporters asked her here about the protests over the death of Sudipto Gupta, 22, in Kolkata police custody Tuesday.
Mamata was here to meet ailing legendary singer Manna Dey at his residence.
She told reporters that the post-mortem would show that it was “an accident”.
The death “is unfortunate. It is not police assault”, Banerjee said.
