Mumbai cop’s beating: Two legislators sent to police custody

Mumbai (IANS): Two Maharashtra legislators surrendered Thursday to the Mumbai police after they were booked for assaulting a policeman at the Maharashtra Vidhan Bhavan two days ago. A court later sent them to a day’s police custody.

A Crime Branch official said that both legislators have been remanded in their custody for further questioning.

Legislators Ram Kadam and Kshitij Thakur Thursday morning surrendered before the Crime Branch.

Thakur (Independent) and Kadam (Maharashtra Navnirman Sena) were among the five legislators suspended from the legislature for assaulting Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Suryawanshi on the first floor of the Vidhan Bhavan Tuesday afternoon.

The other three were Pradeep Jaiswal (Independent), Rajan Salvi (Shiv Sena), and Jaikumar Rawal (Bharatiya Janata Party).

The provocation for the assault – described by several political leaders as a ‘Black Day’ in the state legislature’s history – was that Suryawanshi stopped Thakur’s vehicle for overspeeding on the Rajiv Gandhi Bandra-Worli Sea Link Monday morning.
