Mexico City : Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez was celebrating Tuesday his 85th birthday together with his family at his home in the Mexican capital, EFE said.
The Nobel Prize-winning author stayed all day at his home in the exclusive neighbourhood of Pedregal de San Angel with those closest to him, both family and employees, but with no lavish party to mark the occasion.
“Gabo”, wearing a checked suit, black shirt and grey tie, allowed EFE to take several photos in the house where between 1965 and 1966 he wrote his masterpiece, “One Hundred Years of Solitude”.
With a beaming smile he posed for pictures in his garden together with grandson Mateo Garcia and his assistant Genovevo Quiros.
The house was inundated with flowers sent by well-wishers to the novelist, who moved to Mexico in 1961.
He only expected to stay a few weeks, but in the end his new surroundings convinced him not to leave and inspired him to write “One Hundred Years of Solitude”, an idea that came to him after reading “Pedro Paramo” by Mexico’s Juan Rulfo.
Mexico is honouring Gabo with a number of activities around the country, including two exhibitions based on the author’s life and works.
Besides his 85th birthday, Garcia Marquez will mark this year the 30th anniversary of his Nobel Prize.
